Winner Best New Play Of 2005 - OC Weekly
Throughout the nineteen fifties, the United States government conducted above-ground nuclear testing on Nevada's soil ... and aimed the fallout directly toward rural Southern Utah.
The "downwind" syndrome was born.
The Land Southward is a non-linear, full-length play that explores and exposes one of the most deadly United States government conspiracies to date.

I had the privilege of attending "The Land Southward" during its world premiere in California a few years ago, and I recall that there were very few dry eyes in the audience when the stage lights faded. Shedding a few tears is understandable during a play that deals with the horrifying consequences of above-ground nuclear bomb explosions carried out on American soil by our own government. Radiation sickness, death, bizarre birth defects, sky-high levels of cancer, official cover-ups and outright lies, confusion, self blame, loss of faith: All of these are dealt with in this powerful play. Some of the tears were shed for the people--mostly Mormons of southern Utah--who were in the direct path of radioactive plumes from the nuclear explosions and were affected most by the fallout. But the tears were also for ourselves because, at its heart, "The Land Southward" is a brilliant examination of a universal concept: betrayal. What impressed me most was the way the story was told. I felt as if a quilt were being pieced together, with some of the characters adding many pieces over the five decades covered in the play's time line and some adding one small, vital bit. Some pieces come from the period when above-ground nuclear bomb testing was being conducted, some from the '60s and '70s, some from today. The play moves forward and back in time, with well-chosen historical references--songs, posters, and even a game show--to let us know when the action occurs.
In the end, there are gaping holes in the "quilt" created in this play. These are intentional holes, not due to any shortcomings on the part of playwright Darcy Hogan, who spent years conducting research on the subject of nuclear testing. They are caused by the refusal of the U.S. government to release files on this dark period of our history. The holes make this play chilling and even more relevant today: We wonder now, for example, how much radiation was released--and continues to be released--from nuclear power plants in Japan that were harmed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and how much of that radiation is reaching us in the air or in the flesh of fish, and we shudder at the thought that our government knows . . . and will never tell us the truth.
As a teacher and college instructor, I can recommend "The Land Southward" as a central text for high school and college classes, one through which a variety of subjects could be explored: history, science, social studies, art, literature, writing, and, of course, drama. It could be performed by a small cast, with each member taking on several roles, or by an entire class. As an avid theatre-goer, I can recommend the play to literary managers looking for that rare bird to set their season apart: a contemporary play that combines the warmth of "Our Town" with the gritty social relevance of "The Laramie Project."

The Land Southward Darcy Hogan 9781257068784 Books Reviews
Hogan has brought to light something that has been swpet under the rug for far too long. This must read will make you laugh, cry and think like you have never before. Do not let another day go by before you read this play!
In the Cold War era, above-ground atomic testing was common in southern Nevada - and the fallout from the tests blew downwind over central and southern Utah, resulting in increased cancer rates, birth defects and chronic illnesses. The Land Southward looks at the Utahns affected by the "secret nuclear war" on American soil, personalizing their experience and giving it voice. Staged in Utah, California and Colorado, this is a fast-paced and brilliantly imaginative play that illuminates the massive injustice done to people who wanted to believe their government was doing the right thing.
Darcy Hogan's play is nothing short of brilliant! It has played to rave reviews everywhere produced and is gathering a cult following. The play is quick witted, insightful and very moving. Although, Darcy is a part-time playwright, you wouldn't know it. Seasoned Playwrights marvel at the dialog, structure and tempo. Finally, it shares a great story that so few know about, yet everyone should.
Hogan has created a modern work for the theatre that is thought-provoking and challenges your view of American society. Her characters are well-rounded, interesting and a delight for actors to portray and for the audience to watch! The Land Southward is a play that must be read and must be seen so as not repeat the sins of the past. Kudos on a well-written work!
