Everyone knows the story of Hansel and Grethel, but what happened after the happily ever after? Joseph Duncan, author of The Oldest Living Vampire Saga, expands upon the fairy tale originally recorded and published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Grethel, a grown woman now, is haunted by her ordeal in the witch's cottage. The old crone who held her captive when she was a child is long dead, but the witch's spirit calls out to Grethel in her dreams. It is a siren's call that Grethel finds both terrifying and alluring, and when a handsome young nobleman seduces the woodcutter's daughter, Grethel finds herself torn between her desire for love and her thirst for the old crone's arcane knowledge.
"Happily ever after" can have very different meanings, some sweet and hopeful... and some quite dark and frightful. Grethel is a fairy tale for adults, a grim fable about the seductive power of love and the allure of evil.

Just downloaded and read this story this evening. It was a really good story, better than I expected. A fast read but very entertaining. Before I started the book I looked up the original Brothers Grimm story online and read that first. Of course I was familiar with the story of Hantzel and Gretel but I don't think I had ever actually read the story, just gleaned bits and pieces from popular culture. I enjoyed this imagined follow up very much although I wish it had been a bit longer. Joseph is a very talented writer. I have read most of his books and all of his short fiction. I would enjoy reading a volume of short stories by this author.Product details

Grethel edition by Joseph Duncan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is how it really happened. This one has a life lesson to be learned just like the Grimm version but this one is more detailed.
When can we read the next release of frankenstonia? Keep 'em coming Joe.
As usual, Joe has taken a concept, this time Hansel and Grethel, and turned it inside out. I only wish the story was longer, very enjoyable reading. Thanks Joe!
A great fairy tale read. Duncan does it again, takes a great fairy tale and makes a greater sequel to it
Duncan hits the mark again in this very enjoyable short read of what ever happened to? I don't want to give it away, but Grethel is all grown up and seeing the world in a much more realistic way than she did!
A great twist on an old creepy tale. Joseph never fails to entertain with is totally original and creative stories.
What happens after happily ever after. Nice ending to a classic story. Enjoyable short and sweet! Love the bit of Gore that was put into the s tory. Glad to see it wasn't a watered down rewrite of the story.
I really enjoyed this short story. Very worth the read~
